Art Collecting at Home #DesignTV

The world of art can be an intimidating place for homeowners to delve into. It doesn’t need to be.

Here are 10 quick tips to help get you started!

1) Collect things that appeal to you, not because they match the drapes.

2)Visit galleries in your own area and when you travel. Be sure to speak to the people there. Most galleries are helpful and friendly. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

*DON’T bring your friends if you are seriously looking to buy. It doesn’t matter what they think this is YOUR art.

Do bring your life partner.

3) Don’t be afraid to mix things up a little.

Folk art, fine art, artful french furniture.

4) Start small. I love the Rothko above but obviously I can’t afford one of my own! I could afford this Tom Hammick pictured in my dining room.

5) Rent your art. Many cities have public galleries with art rental programmes. This allows you to bring real art into your home without making a major commitment to a piece. It helps you to discover what pieces you’d like to live with and the mediums and genres that speak to you!

The Shelly Mansel pictured above is not a rental.

6) Buy from students. Most art schools have student galleries and sales and shows at the end of term. You can also commission a student to do a piece especially for you. Why not help them pay for their education by investing in a future heirloom! This is Andrea Crabbe with her work.

7) Show off your children’s talent! Make your blooming artist feel like the real deal. The only cost to you is the framing and think of the pride your child will feel seeing their work framed!

8) Art doesn’t mean just a painting. I framed this tapestry in a plexi box to give it more importance and presence in the clients room.

9)Attend openings and meet the artists to learn why and how they create what they create!

10) Don’t be afraid to take the lead! Choose the things you truly love and get out of the pack! Pictured: Arne Quinze- Africa Electronica at Saatchi Gallery London.
