Kitchen Renovation: The Floor

Our floor started with a dated tile that was hiding all sorts of sins beneath…… It had to come out.

In fact it had to come ALL the way out.

It turned out that underneath the seemingly fine floor there was a lot of rot and water damage. We dug down a couple of feet and took measures to resolve the water issues.

With plumbing and electrical run the space was filled with gravel.

Next came vapour barriers, insulation, and in-floor heating.

Concrete was poured and the base for our new floor was in place.

Existing stone slabs in front of the fireplace inspired me to recreate the look with our cement floor.

We scored the floor and applied various acid washes in places that would be hidden by cabinets to test our methods.

We had samples in all corners of the room to see how the light would effect it.

Next we set about creating the pattern for our “slabs”. No two could be alike and imperfection was the goal.

The floor was scored and chipped in strategic places followed by a couple of coats of colourant.

Final coats of sealer are applied to protect and enhance.

Quality products get quality results. Lambswool applicator at the ready.

And the finished floor waits to dry.
Now that the floor is complete we can select the perfect stone for the countertops. The goal is to match as closely as possible.
